Creation of adapted tools - Creation of Khmer Braille and a Khmer sign language : Krousar Thmey was the first NGO to propose education for blind and deaf children. We had to develop the tools necessary for good communication, so teams worked on creating a Khmer version of Braille and adapting American sign language for use in the Khmer language. - Publishing books for deaf and blind children : Three Braille book workshops set up by Krousar Thmey make textbooks from the national curriculum accessible to the blind. For deaf children, sign language instruction books developed by Krousar Thmey complement the teaching in specialized schools. 4 schools for deaf children and 4 schools for blind children in cities- Some 450 pupils are learning sign language in our four schools devoted to deaf children where they receive an education adapted for deafness under the guidance of specially-trained teachers. Courses in dance and rhythm complement their learning and introduce them to the arts. - Four schools for blind children, under High Royal Patronage, offer almost 150 pupils a way to become independent in spite of their handicap. On top of standard courses, they get instruction in mobility, orientation and music. For more information, see our 2003 annual report on the School of Chabr Ampov : Providing the blind children of Cambodia with an education in PDF format (287 KB)* Discover the stories of Wanna and of Sothy and Sothea. |

28 classes integrated into provincial public schools As with many other disabilities in Cambodia, deafness and blindness are strongly looked down upon and children with any disability are ostracized. At Krousar Thmey's initiative, 28 classes dedicated to deaf children have been progressively opened in provincial public schools enabling 215 deaf children to go to school every day. This is encouraging the acceptance of the handicapped in Khmer society. The first integrated class for blind children opened in October 2003. For more information, see our 2003 semestrial report on our programme for Handicaped Children, covering the integrated classes for deaf children in the provinces and the school for blind children in Battambang available only in French and PDF format (241 KB)*
Adapted vocational training - young blind people can follow training in music, weaving, massage, computers, etc - young deaf people can learn dance and handicrafts. However, since the programme for deaf students only began in 1997, vocational training isn't yet in place. Other training programmes are being evaluated. |
