School of Khmer arts and culture

Located in the heart of Banteay Meanchey, a province marked by the Thai culture, this school is a centre of influence for Khmer culture and art. Founded in 1996, this school has worked in close collaboration with two local state schools. The taught art subjects are integrated into the curriculum. All students at the schools spend one hour each week learning a traditional art.

At the beginning of the year, they choose one of four disciplines: drawing, sculpture (of wood and also of leather to make puppets for shadow plays), dance and music. Thirty-five students at the school are the protagonists of a campaign to prevent child trafficking and child prostitution.

The art school organises examination sessions at the end of each term (in February and in June). The grades achieved are included in the student’s assessment, and is testimony to the recognition of this school and its Art lessons by the National Ministry of Education.
