Reproducing temple bas-reliefs The Angkorian temples abound in bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the past. As you are probably aware, casts are taken of such bas-reliefs and are found in many places. But do you know how they are made? First, a stone mold is made in the image of the bas-relief chosen. Damp paper, the composition of which varies, is then applied to the mold with a small sledgehammer to make it fit the shape of the mold. Next, colored paint is applied before the whole thing is left to dry in the sun. Several hours later, the reproduction can be removed from the mold and is ready for display. |

The magic of shadow theater Shadow theater is a common art form in Siem Reap. Passages from the Ramayana (legendary stories) are staged with leather marionettes representing various people. The making of these marionettes is a specialized art which is often taught by an old master. The marionette's contours are sketched in chalk on a piece of untreated leather. Specific rules must be observed. Then the shape is cut out before being painted. All shadow theater marionettes are made by hand and require a lot of concentration and attention to detail. |
